PRAGGNANANDHAA BECOMES YOUNGEST INTERNATIONAL MASTER EVER!


Houston, we have an IM – and he is ten years and ten months of age!(Age at which children start thinking about their hobbies, this little master has set a world record) Better learn to pronounce this Indian's name: Praggnanandhaa, Pragg-na-nan-dhaa. The 9th KIIT International Chess Festival was held from May 23-30,2016 in Bhubaneswar,Orissa where Praggnanandhaa made his third IM norm, after norms in Cannes and Moscow.

SHAMKIR CHESS 2016


The “Shamkir Chess 2016” International chess tournament is dedicated to the memory of late Azerbaijani Grandmaster Vugar Gashimov. Held in Shamkir, Azerbaijan from May 25th to June 5th, 2016, the tournament is a 10 player round-robin with a total prize fund of €73,000 and €15,000 for first place. After five rounds of breathtaking chess, Grandmaster Caruana Fabiano is in the lead with 4.5/5 points.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2016


Ernesto Inarkiev was named after Che Guevara and would have made the revolutionary proud for the way he won the 2016 European Championship, finishing in clear first place on an unbeaten 9/11 points. Igor Kovalenko ended brilliantly by beating Fressinet and Goganov to snatch clear silver, while Baadur Jobava took bronze on tiebreaks after beating his “client” Radek Wojtaszek. Ponomariov, Grandelius, Ragger and Howell were among those who missed out on World Cup places.

The tournament saw this stamp issued especially in its honor. 

ASIAN CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2016


The 2016 Asian Continental Championship is taking place in the Uzbekistan Hotel, Tashkent from 26 May - 3 June with five places in the World Cup at stake.The tournament's top seed is Vietnam's Grandmaster Le Quang Liem, with rivals including local hero GM Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Chinese rising star GM Wei Yi. After six rounds, Le Quang Liem and Wei Yi are share the lead with 5/6 points.

ASIAN WOMEN'S CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2016


The 2016 Asian Women's Continental Championship is taking place in the Uzbekistan Hotel, Tashkent from 26 May - 3 June. The tournament's top seed is Iran's Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, while the reigning Champion is her compatriot Mitra Hejazipour. WGM Bhakti Kulkarni of India is leading the tournament with 5/6 points after six rounds.

TOP 12 FRENCH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 2016


The 2016 Top 12 French Team Championship is taking place from 28 May to 7 June in Ladoucette Castle, Drancy, France. The 12 best French teams play a single round-robin over 11 rounds, with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, David Navara and many more top players taking part. Each match is played over 8 boards, with teams choosing from a starting list of up to 16 players.Unsurprisingly, Team Clichy, consisting of MVL and Hammer, is leading the tally after four rounds.

 Drancy has since 2008 the label "city flower ".

ANATOLY KARPOV TURNS 65!


When Anatoly Karpov was 11 years old, he was invited to Botvinnik’s chess school. But the “Patriarch” passed a harsh verdict: “The boy has no clue about chess and therefore absolutely no future as a chess player.” Rarely was a judgement about chess talent more wrong — Karpov went on to become the 12th World Chess Champion.He turned 65 on the 23rd of May.

AMERICAN CONTINENTAL 2016


The 11th American Continental Championship is taking place from 28 May-5 June in the CIFCO Convention Centre in San Salvador, El Salvador. Players from all the American chess federations are competing in this 11-round Swiss open for a $5,000 first prize and four places in the 2017 World Cup.



NEZHMETDINOV  RAPID CUP 2016

The 38th Nezhmetdinov Cup started with the rapid tournament that was held on 29-30th May at the Central Chess School in Kazan, Russia. The tournament format was 9-round Swiss with the time control 15 min + 5 sec. Grandmaster Gata Kamsky took a clear first place with 7.5 points in the field of 107 players.

IGOR KURNOSOV MEMORIAL 2016

A rapid tournament dedicated to the memory of Grandmaster Igor Kurnosov was held from 26-28th May at the congress hall of the World Trade Center in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk took a clear fist place with 9,0/11 points in the field of 143 players. The stage of the Russian Rapid Grand-Prix was organized by the Russian Chess Federation, Chelyabinsk Chess Federation and Chelyabinsk Sports Ministry.

ICCD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

The 2016 ICCD World Individual Deaf Chess Championships (Men-Ladies-Juniors-Blind-Seniors-Open-Blitz) were held from 17-25th May in Yerevan, Armenia. The Open section saw 2 GMs, 3 IMs and 2 FMs out of the 24 players in which  IMs Duilio Collutiis of Italy won the title with 6.5/9 points.The Women’s Section was a 10 player round robin event with 2 WIM’s in the field where Tatiana Baklanova of Ukraine won with a score of 8/9.

ARRABAL TRANSLATES HOU YIFAN INTERVIEW


Fernando Arrabal Terán is a playwright, screenwriter, film director, novelist and poet, last survivor among the “three avatars of modernism” (New York Times theatre critic Mel Gussow). Arrabal has a strong interest in chess and writes a column on it for the French weekly L’Express. He has reproduced Chessbase's interview depicting Yifan as Joan of Arc and himself as Pan, the mythological Greek shepherd god of the nymphs.


PRAGGNANADHAA RAMESH BABU - "MY AIM IS TO REACH 3000 ELO"


On 29th May 2016, R. Praggnandhaa won his ninth round game at the KIIT International Open, Bhubaneshwar against Al Muthaiah. The win secured him his third IM norm and as he had already surpassed 2400 on the rating list, he became the youngest International Master in the World at the age of ten years and ten months.
