VLADIMIR PUTIN OPENS CHESS SECTION IN SIRIUS CENTER IN SOCHI


On May 10th a new Chess section has opened at the Sirius Educational Center in Sochi. The launch of the project was announced by Chairman of the Center’s Board of Trustees, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, who wished the youngsters and teachers success in mastering the new programme, under which pupils gifted at chess from all around Russia will improve their skills.




EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2016

Ivan Saric who was the sole leader after six rounds at the European Championship held in Gjakova,Kosovo from May 11-24,2016 suffered a setback in round seven and lost against Ernesto Inarkiev. After this win Inarkiev has 6/7 and shares the lead with top seed David Navara, who won a rook ending against Baadur Jobava. Half-a-point behind the leaders follows a group of six players with 5.5/7 each.





DING LIREN WINS AGAINST WESLEY SO


Ding Liren, China's number one and currently number nine on the FIDE Elo-list from 1st May, wants to establish himself firmly among the world's best. To gain more experience against top players, from 4th to 8th May the Chinese Grandmaster played a four-game match against Wesley So, currently number ten in the world. Ding Liren won the match 2.5-1.5.

HASSELBACKEN OPEN 2016

Dozens of GMs, hundreds of players, it was a fitting event to celebrate 150 years of chess passion. The tournament saw it all, with tales of glory, and others of woe. At the very top was Dmitry Andreikin, the no.1, who justified his seed by taking first, together with Indian Adhiban who was second on tiebreak. Not to mention the last round when 11-year-old Nihal Sareen smashed a GM.

HERAKLION OPEN 2016


Grandmaster Dusan Rajkovic from Serbia won the 17th International Heraklion Open that was held from 2-9th March at the Galaxy Hotel, in Heraklion, Greece. The famous veteran (74 years) collected 7,5/9 points, leaving the chasing pack half a point behind.The tournament was organized by the Heraklion OAA, Heraklion CC, Dec.Admin.of Crete and Municipality of Heraklion.99 players competed in the 9-round Swiss tournament.

ABDUMALIK AND KOSTENKO ARE CHAMPIONS OF KAZAKHSTAN


The 2016 Kazakhstan Chess Championships for men and women were held from 3-13th May at the Astana International Hotel in Almaty.The women’s championship was 10-player round robin with top-seeded WGM Zhansaya Abdumalik taking the title with 7/9 points.The men’s section was a 12-player round robin with the average ELO 2449. It was a closely contested tournament with three players sharing the first place with 7,5/11 points each – GMs Petr Kostenko, Rinat Jumabayev and Murtas Kazhgaleyev.Kostenko was declared champion on superior tie-break score.

JULIO GRANDA ZUNIGA WITH CRUSHING SCORE IN LLUCMAJOR OPEN

Peruvian Grandmaster Julio Granda Zuniga completely dominated the 5th Open Internacional de LLucmajor that was held from 8-15th May at the Club Nautico de LLucmajor, Mallorca, Spain.Granda Zuniga finished the event with 8,5/9 points.177 players from 33 countries participated in the tournament. Among them were 25 Grandmasters and 25 International Masters.

WUNSIEDEL FESTIVAL 2016

Grandmaster Grzegorz Gajewski emerged winner of the 10th Wunsiedel Schach-Festival that was held from 5-8th May in Wunsiedel, Germany. Gajewski, who was the second of Viswanathan Anand at #Candidates Tournament, collected 6 points from 7 games to become clear winner of the Master section. There were 142 players in the field.

Grzegorz Gajewski walked every day with Vishy Anand to the tournament hall during the Candidates.


TOM HACKNEY EXHIBITS IN WORLD CHESS HALL OF FAME

Chess has always been a topic of artists and painters and some artists were also good players. One of them was Marcel Duchamp, who in the 1920s was one of the strongest players in France and even played in Olympiads. With an exhibition by British artist Tom Hackney the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis now pays tribute to Marcel Duchamp.

VISHY ANAND IN OMAN


With an objective to promote chess in the Sultanate, and also among the expatriates, Indian icon #ViswanathanAnand was in Muscat, the capital city of Oman, participating in a series of activities—simultaneous exhibitions, lectures, meetings to promote chess, etc. The six-day trip began on 12th May 2016 and the people of Oman gave him a warm welcome. Anand arrived on an invitation from the International Chess Academy of Oman (ICAO).

HARIKRISHNA PENTALA TURNS 30

ASIAN JUNIOR 2016


The Asian Junior Chess Championship was held from April 3-11,2016 in New Delhi, India.India was the clear favourite among the 12 Asian countries participating in the event.Indian GM Aravindh Chithambaram defeated Nima Javanbakht of Iran in the final round to score 7/9 points to walk away with the title in the boys' section.In the girls' category, Mongolian girl Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh took gold with 7/9 points after defeating the invincible Indian, Vaishali R.

This Friday #MagnusCarlsen streamed a live Q&A session on Facebook, during which he answered questions from fans. The 28-minute interview saw Magnus talk about his rivalry with Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri, the impact of computers, how books influenced him while he was growing up and much more. 


DMITRY ANDREIKIN


Dmitry Andreikin won the Hasselbacken Open last weekend with an unbeaten 7.5/9, but the 26-year-old Russian remains an enigma. Born in 1990, like Magnus Carlsen and so many other top players, and gifted enough to become World Junior Champion, Russian Champion and a World Cup runner-up, he’s gone long periods playing barely a game. In a recent interview he talked about his chess career so far, what he needs to change and how he sees chess in general.

#BharatSinghChauhan is a noted International Organiser and the President of Delhi Chess Association. He is also the CEO of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), Deputy President of the Asian Chess Federation, Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and the Chairman of the FIDE Technical Commission. To the chess players in India, he is better known as the organiser of the best tournament in India in terms of quality and the prize fund. The 25th Annual Chicago Open will be held over Memorial Day weekend from May 26-30, 2016, at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel, 601 North Milwaukee Ave, Wheeling, Illinois.The event has 8 sections.The Open Section is a 5-day tournament with FIDE norms possible. 

GRANDMASTER TOURNAMENT ODISHA

The 9th KIIT International Chess Festival will be held from May 23-30,2016 in Bhubaneswar,Orissa. The event has three sections and the total prize fund is 19 lakh rupees (nearly USD 28000).
